February, 2020 DAISY Nurse Leader Award

DAISY Nurse Leader AwardTammy Jones, PhD, RN, NE-BC – Associate Chief Operating and Nursing Officer

Please join the Center for Nursing Excellence in congratulating Tammy Jones, PhD, RN, NE-BC for being selected as the first UAMS DAISY Nurse Leader Award recipient!  This award expresses gratitude for courageous leaders fostering an environment where compassion and courage can thrive.

Tammy is the Associate Chief Operating and Nursing Officer for UAMS and was nominated by two different UAMS co-workers, Lavonia Walker and Aleshia Morrow.   The comments below are taken from their nominations which speaks to each characteristic of an outstanding nurse leader.

“Creates an environment where attributes of trust, compassion, mutual respect, continued professional development and ethical behavior are modeled and support.

*Tammy has a very transparent leadership style. She shares her vision for the department and is open to suggestions for quality improvement, employee engagement/morale, and process improvements. We can depend on her to follow up with issues/questions.

* Tammy leads by example. She always makes sure that her staff can talk to her about anything. She takes time out of her schedule to resolve any problems that may arise and makes sure that she listens to nurse’s concerns and tries to figure out a way to solve the issues, having everyone’s best interest in mind.

Motivates staff with a shared vision and enthusiasm to achieve better outcomes for themselves and for their patients and families.

*Tammy is a huge fan of employee engagement and likes to incorporate her vision along with staff input. She is very passionate about finding ways to get staff involved with policy reviews, quality improvement, recognition, etc. She loves feedback from staff and uses their feedback to improve our department.  The staff does not feel like they are just being told how to operate, but are considered as a valued team member. She is a great motivational speaker and I aspire to follow in her footsteps as a leader.

*Tammy always has a smile on her face. Even in tough moments, she makes the worse situations seem fixable. Tammy comes to meetings with a plan and an action to back it up. A real boss lady! She deserves, earned and shows us daily why she is our director of nursing.

Promotes and enhances the image of nursing within the organization, the community and the profession included engagement, recognition, and retention.

*Tammy makes sure to acknowledge and give “kudos” during each staff meeting for going the extra mile for safe practices, being a team player, good catches, etc.  She loves to start and end meetings on a positive note and encourages staff to continue to recognize each other via integrity submission and/or emails.”

*Tammy created an engagement team so that every voice is heard. She knows it takes every one in every position to work together to get things done. I couldn’t think of a more deserving person than Tammy Jones.”

Thank You, Tammy Jones for demonstrating the true values of a DAISY Nurse Leader!
