Critical Care

Intensive Care Unit (E4)

E4 is a 28-bed ICU unit located in the Harry P. & Betty Jo Ward Towers provides care for a wide variety of Medical, Neurology, Neuro-Surgical and Bone Marrow Transplant patients. The unit is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a highly-trained all RN staff. Comprehensive orientation and educational courses are provided, based on individual need. The exposure to educational enhancements combined with the opportunity to participate in research is unmatched!

Trauma Surgical Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (H4)

H4 has a 24 bed capacity and cares for a variety of patients.  Care for the trauma patient includes those who have had trauma related accidents, blunt or penetrating trauma, bone and joint injuries, spinal trauma, or traumatic brain injuries to name a few.  Care for surgical patients includes those who have had solid organ transplants (liver and kidney), abdominal surgeries, and a variety of other surgical interventions that may require additional monitoring in an ICU.  Care for the cardiovascular patients includes those who have had coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve repair or replacement, thoracotomy, carotid endarterectomy, or a variety of vascular related interventions.

We also care for patients who have experienced a myocardial infarction and require cardiac catheterization, congestive heart failure or aortic aneurysm pathway patients.  Specialized equipment that may be used to care for patients include intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), induced hypothermia, pulmonary artery catheter monitoring, and external ventricular drain monitoring.  Education is provided to staff that includes the basic critical care course, dysrhythmia course, advanced cardiac life support certification, trauma nursing core certification, and intra-aortic balloon pump and continuous renal replacement therapy classes.

Trauma Surgical Specialties / Progressive Care (F4)

F4 serves patients admitted through the Trauma/Acute Care Services. Up to 15 beds are dedicated to an intermediate level of care for patients of any service requiring cardiac monitoring, frequent assessment and intervention, IV medication drips and long term mechanical ventilation.  Diagnoses include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, chest trauma, orthopedic trauma, and geriatric falls.

Neuroscience Progressive Care Unit (NPCU) (H8)

H8 is a 30-bed unit specializing in neurological and neurosurgical diagnoses. UAMS is designated as a Comprehensive Stroke Certified Center, providing the highest level of acute stroke care, Comprehensive Level 4 Epilepsy Center, providing the highest level of epilepsy monitoring and treatment, and recognized by Healthgrades with the 2022 Cranial Neurosurgery Excellence Award. Neurosurgical services include pre and post-op care for craniotomy, spinal decompression, deep brain stimulation (DBS), and surgical EEG. Neurological services consist of care for stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disease, and neurodegenerative disease.

Acute Hemodialysis (H7C)

H7C is a 6 station area with a separate room that can be used for isolation. Services are restricted to hemodialysis/hemoperfusion procedures. The patient population includes acute and/or chronic inpatients who require hemodialysis. Patients who are pre or post renal transplant may also receive treatments.

Patients referred from the Emergency Department (ED), may also receive dialysis treatments in the unit as well as in the ED area. Portable dialysis machines are utilized in the ED as well as other units in the hospital.

Hemodialysis treatments may also be provided on other units when the patients’ condition limits their travel to the dialysis unit. This includes but is not limited to, critical care patients, isolation patients, neutropenic patients and other patients who may be considered unstable.

The unit is open Monday thru Saturday, 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM, with staff on call for emergency care 24 hours/7 days a week.
