Please join the Center for Nursing Excellence in congratulating Jonathan Goodman, RN, for being selected as the DAISY Award recipient for the month of January!
Jonathan Goodman, RN, F4 – Trauma Progressive Care, and was nominated by a co-worker. The nomination below reflects how Jonathan impacted their lifes in a very special way.
Nomination:
Jon provided care for a patient and his family during a traumatic and very hard and sad time. This particular patient had one of the worst wounds I have ever seen, and I work on H4 in the Trauma ICU, so I have seen some very bad injuries. This particular patient’s injury was sudden and took him from being a productive, hardworking man, to being injured so badly that he and his family opted for palliative, comfort care measures. Jon provided the most tender and compassionate care to this man and his family that I think I have ever witnessed. He was gentle and kind and took extra time to be present with them in their heartache and grief throughout the day. This particular shift Jon was also precepting one of my students: She learned so many very valuable lessons on being a wonderful, caring, compassionate nurse. I know she will never forget her day with him. Toward the end of the day, we got word that EMS was on the way to transfer this patient to a hospice facility closer to all of his family. Jon enlisted the aid of myself and several of my students to provide one last complex dressing change for this patient, so he would be able to transfer and settle into his hospice home without needing another dressing change that night. It took all five of us over 30 minutes to support the patient in order to carefully unwrap and redress this wound. Jon took his time and was so very gentle every step of the way. He was a shining example to all of us on how to be the best kind of nurse. I am proud that Jon works as part of our critical care team and I will seek to place students with him whenever I can, because I know they will get the best kind of education in how to care for their patients. Even now recalling this afternoon dressing change brings tears to my eyes. Jon deserves to be recognized for his extraordinary compassionate care in one of the hardest situations I have seen. He was amazing with the patient and the patient’s family, as well as being an extraordinary example of nursing exceptionalism.
Thank you, Jonathan!
