Decius Hardin, RN – F9- ENT/Orthopedic Surgical Specialties
Please join the Center for Nursing Excellence in congratulating Decius Hardin, RN for being selected as the DAISY Award recipient for the month of August!
Decius Hardin works on unit F9- ENT/Orthopedic Surgical Specialties and was nominated by an employee. The nomination below reflects how Decius impacted their life in a very special way.
Dece and I work together on F9. I have worked with her for approximately 5 years. May 14, 2022 was a very challenging night for me. I was assigned to the Progressive patients. (I love taking care of Progressive patients, but it is not always easy) One of these patients was acutely ill with Covid, diagnosed after admission. There were major issues with his oxygen saturations, and he basically required all my time. In other words, I was not able to provide the type of care that I typically do to my other two progressives because I was in his room twice an hour. He needed me. This causes me to have some anxiety because I’m thinking about the things I need to be doing for my other patients. I am stubborn. There are times I should just say I need help, but I often feel like I can do it. Dece had the patients closest to mine and she sat close to me that night. She noticed that I was struggling to provide care to three patients. (I had to move this patient to a room with negative pressure, so I was going from the very start of the hall to the very end of the hall) She did what nurses did in the good ole days. She stepped up without me having to say a word. One of my patients had an issue with a dressing leaking and they needed a complete linen change. She did it. Another patient that was not mine, but another nurse on our hall needed a linen change. She did that too. As I was working with my one patient that needed me, she checked on my others and helped me complete necessary task. The night was already demanding, but it could have been worse if she had not stepped up and helped me while providing care to her patients too. I nominate Dece because not only is she an excellent co-worker to me and others. I appreciate her. On top of that I admire the way she cares for her patients. She always sits close to her patients so that she knows the instant they call. She is very attentive and caring. I sometimes hear her in the rooms laughing and talking to her patients as if she had known them forever. Sometimes being a floor nurse can be overwhelming and one may feel that they are not appreciated. I do not think Dece feels that way, but if she ever has, I just want the opportunity to say “I see you, I appreciate you, I look forward to the nights that you here with me, and you are an exceptional nurse.” I think that she should be honored with a DAISY Award, but if she not I hope that this nomination will be a reminded to her that another nurse thinks she great!
Great job, Decius!
