Melanie Joyner, Community Health Advocate in Care Management
Please join the Center for Nursing Excellence in congratulating Melanie Joyner- for being selected as the July BEE Award winner!
Melanie is a Community Health Advocate and was nominated by a UAMS employee. The following is the story of how Melanie impacted their life in a way that they will never forget.
Melanie is one of our Community Health Advocates. Recently, we had a blind and homeless patient show up in our Emergency Department. The pt was brought to the Crisis Stabilization Unit and later UAMS for services because he was said to have “Exhausted” all his services. The patient had no ID, no insurance, or a place to stay. Due to his blindness and the limited number of male shelters, it was difficult to find him a place to go. The patient had been declined at shelters and passed along from one facility to the next. I contacted Melanie the night before and Melanie immediately began assisting me with the pt. Needless to say, this patient is a complex case. However, Melanie was able to assist the patient in applying for insurance, birth certificate for his ID and finding him a place to stay while he becomes connected with the World Services for the Blind. Melanie gathered clothing and food for the patient. As a Social Worker, I am in awe of Melanie’s resourcefulness, compassion, and her ability to find a solution for some of our most complex patients. She is absolutely one of the most EXCEPTIONAL individuals that I get to work with every day. She goes above and beyond for patients, and I just want to honor her.
Way to go Melanie!
Please congratulate Melanie for Being Exceptional Every day at UAMS!
