Bereavement

Choosing an Autopsy:
What is an Autopsy?
An autopsy is an examination of your baby’s body that may identify the reason/s of death.
What do I need to know?
There are different types of examinations that can be performed. Ask your nurse or doctor to go over these options with you.
Autopsies performed at UAMS are free of charge.
Autopsies will not interfere with your plans for a funeral or memorial service.
We will NOT perform an autopsy without your consent.

Funeral Home:
Funeral homes can provide either a funeral service and burial of your baby, or perform cremation. The funeral home may come to the hospital to pick up your baby whenever you are ready, or you may choose to transport your baby to the funeral home yourself. Not all funeral homes allow self-transport. Our staff can give you a list of funeral homes in your area. You will be able to spend as much time as you would like with your baby; when you are ready, our staff will also help you complete all of the necessary paperwork.

Options at UAMS:
You may also arrange for cremation through UAMS free of charge. However, in this case, UAMS will arrange for final disposition; you will NOT be able to receive the cremains. If you would like to have your baby cremated and receive the cremains, we can help you find a funeral home to provide this service. You will be able to spend as much time as you would like with your baby; when you are ready, our staff will help you complete the necessary paperwork.
