Planning a Service

Some people choose to have services and others do not. This is a very personalized and individual decision. Here are some suggestions for planning a service for your baby should you decide to do so.
Personalize the service as much as possible. There is no right or wrong way to hold a service as long as it is meaningful to you.
Some options are:
Burial or cremation. Your religion and cultural beliefs should be considered when making decisions for your baby’s service and the location of it. Some cemeteries have a certain area designated for infants that may be discounted or free. Some families already have burial plots purchased.
After selecting a day and time for the service, other things to consider are:
Would like a program at the service?
Will family members or close friends participate in the service?
Would you like a clergy or another person to officiate service?
Who are you going to invite?
What do you want written in your baby’s obituary? The funeral home can assist with the writing and submission of obituary to the local newspaper if you desire.
What photos (if any) will you display at the service? You could have a powerpoint slide show (scrolling on screen).
Do you want to pick out special prayers?
Do you want special readings/quotes? (There are suggestions on the following pages)
Will you want siblings or other small children from family to be involved? (Balloon release, special art or poem).
Would you like a blessing of the baby and/or parent(s)?
Will there be a reflection time (opening the floor for others to speak)?
Will there be a moment of silence?
Will there be special music? Does a family member or friend have musical talent?
Instrumental music can be a great option.
Consider asking those that attend the service to make a donation to a local group or hospital in memory of your baby and to support other parents who may be experiencing a similar situation (money, blankets, clothes, hats, stuffed animals, etc.)
Other ways to honor your baby can be:
-Plant a tree or flower or create a memorial garden
– Wear special jewelry with charm or birthstone
– Have a balloon release, butterfly release or bubbles at service (resembling set free)
– Light a candle or candles for each attendee in honor of your baby
– Write letters to your baby or write your thoughts in a journal
– Write poems about or to your baby
– Make an album or memory box
