Services for Hearing-Impaired Patients
Alerting systems and telephone amplifiers are available free of charge from the UAMS Audiology Department. A closed captioning device for your television and a video telephone are also available free of charge from the Family Resource Center on the first floor of the hospital. If you need any of these items or an interpreter, please tell your nurse.
Case Coordinators
UAMS case coordinators are available to help you plan for your discharge needs. They work with your doctors, nurses and therapists to help with information and referrals to services you may need at home. They can also help with referrals for home health, home infusion and medical equipment you may need at home and referrals to other facilities such as rehab centers and long-term care facilities. They can also provide emotional support for you and your family.
If you think you will need help in making plans for your discharge or care after you leave UAMS, please let your nurse know as soon as possible so you can visit with a member of our Case Coordination team. You may also contact the Case Coordination Department directly at 501-686-5870. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Medication Assistance
If you do not have insurance for your medications, UAMS has a Medication Assistance Program (MAP) that may be able to help you apply for medicines from drug manufacturers. MAP charges a small fee for each medicine. Ask your case coordinator if MAP is appropriate for you and to help schedule an appointment.
Animal-Assisted Therapy
SPOT, or Special Pets Offering Therapy, involves UAMS volunteers, who along with their specially trained and certified animal partners, provide therapy to hospital patients.
With their doctor’s permission, patients on the orthopedic and geriatric units of H6 and F8 have an opportunity each week to visit with a dog in a waiting area or conference room on their floor.
The dogs are crated at all times while traveling in public areas, hallways and elevators, and signs are placed near areas where therapy sessions are taking place.
