Take a look at the HEALERS program!

HEALERS Program

In 2013, the HEALERS program started at UAMS. The program’s tremendous success prompted our graduates to say this about the program:

HEALERS (Health Education Active Learning Experience for Regional Scholars) is a hands-on, interactive program open to high school students in Pulaski County, who will be entering their junior or senior year in the fall of 2017.

We are pleased to announce that the 2017 HEALERS program will be held during the dates of Monday, June 12, through Friday, June 23, 2017; attendance will be mandatory each day, Monday through Friday, from 8:30am to 3:30pm.

This program allows students to:

  • Learn and ask questions about a variety of medical careers directly from a professional in that field.
  • Learn how to administer first aid to accident victims to include bandaging, control of bleeding, splinting and spinal immobilization.
  • Learn how to administer Basic Life Support (CPR).
  • Demonstrate a better understanding of medical terminology.
  • Demonstrate an increased awareness of teenage health-related issues, enabling each individual to make better informed decisions based on scientific data.
  • To gain experience in a clinical setting through active volunteering.

Kajal Desai- “HEALERS is a fabulous program that gives hands-on experience to high school students. It was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! This program gave me several opportunities to see what life in a medical field looks like. It taught me a lot about all the different careers in the medical field. This program allowed me to see a hospital from a medical perspective. In their morning time, we listened to Doctors, Nurses, Physician Assistants and many other medical guest speakers. In the afternoon, we volunteered on different units. During our time spent at UAMS, we learned how to save lives by getting CPR, First Aid and AED certified. Dissecting a pig’s heart and human brain were the coolest things of all. Everything about this program was awesome! I highly recommend students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine to apply for this program.”

Katie

Katie Games- “This program has changed my perspective on the world of medicine. So many things go into health care and I’ve learned some of those many crucial parts through HEALERS. Mostly I’ve learned how important it is to truly want to care for patients and serve them to the fullest of one’s ability. Also, I now recognize that any medical career is not an easy job, but I believe it’s worth it. Through this incredible program, I have more of a drive to want to care for people through a medical profession.”

Sam

Samuel Rhee-“There are things that simply cannot be truly learned without seeing them for yourself. I went into HEALERS with the preconceived notion that I would be unable to volunteer in a meaningful way and the things that we learned would be redundant with what we’ve learned in school, but I couldn’t have been more incorrect. Through HEALERS, I met 11 of the brightest kids in the state. Through HEALERS, I experienced the true impact of health care. Through HEALERS, I saw firsthand how employees at UAMS and hospitals in general give their hearts and their work to the greater good rather than to themselves. That’s not something you’ll get from a textbook.”

Ana De Lira-“The HEALERS program was the best window like experience that showed me the importance of healthcare, patient care and how much I still want to be a part of it.”
