About the Cardiology Clinic at the UAMS Medical Center
At UAMS Health, our skilled team of cardiology professionals is prepared to get to the heart of any cardiovascular problem, from heart disease to heart attack.
Since UAMS is a teaching hospital, our doctors have access to the best technology and equipment. And our doctors are all experts in the field. One of our cardiologists is among a handful of doctors in the nation who performs an advanced procedure called balloon valvuloplasty, which is done to repair a scarred mitral heart valve in patients with rheumatic heart disease. This procedure was recently performed on a woman in the middle of her fifth month of pregnancy who came to UAMS with severe heart failure. By performing this procedure, open heart surgery was avoided, which would have posed a very serious risk to the patient and her baby.
Innovation in Cardiology Care
UAMS Health cardiologists and surgeons have performed hybrid procedures that combine open-heart surgery with stent treatments. Our team performed what is believed to be the first such procedure in Arkansas.
Our surgeons are the only ones in Arkansas who place stent-grafts in the aorta of the chest and abdomen when vessels enlarge or tear. This life-saving procedure does not require the chest or abdomen to be opened surgically. This reduces risks and allows our patients to heal more quickly.
UAMS Health Heart Center
The Cardiology Clinic and the Cardiac Surgery Clinic are part of the UAMS Health Heart Center, where each of our patients has an individual cardiologist and gets the benefit of a team approach. That is because our center is home to a team of specialists in heart care, both surgical and non-surgical. Our focus is on both our patients and their families to provide easy access, outstanding care, and clear communication.
Cutting-Edge Techniques
Through minimally-invasive techniques, our doctors are able to build up the structure of your heart. For patients with structural heart diseases, this can be life-changing. Minimally-invasive structural heart care allows for:
- less time in the hospital
- less pain in recovery
- less medication after the procedure.
Along with treating structural heart issues, our center has an emphasis on treating heart failure.
