About Cardiology Clinic
At UAMS, our skilled team of cardiology professionals is prepared to get to the heart of any cardiovascular problem, from heart disease to heart attack.
Since UAMS is a teaching hospital, our doctors have access to the best technology and equipment. And our doctors are all experts in the field. One of our cardiologists is among a handful of doctors in the nation who performs an advanced procedure called balloon valvuloplasty, which is done to repair a scarred mitral heart valve in patients with rheumatic heart disease. This procedure was recently performed on a woman in the middle of her fifth month of pregnancy who came to UAMS with severe heart failure. By performing this procedure, open heart surgery was avoided, which would have posed a very serious risk to the patient and her baby.
Innovation in Cardiology Care
UAMS cardiologists and surgeons have performed hybrid procedures that combine heart bypass surgery with angioplasty (stent) treatments tailored to the specific needs of individual patients. Our team performed what is believed to be the first such procedure in Arkansas recently, successfully opening two blockages in the coronary arteries using angioplasty and then performing an arterial bypass procedure to open the third blockage.
Our surgeons are the only ones in Arkansas who place stent-grafts in the aorta of the chest and abdomen when these vessels enlarge or tear. This life-saving procedure does not require the chest or abdomen to be opened surgically, which reduces risks associated with more involved surgical procedures and allows our patients to heal more quickly.
