About Dr. Mears

Clinical Biography

Dr. Simon Mears is a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee joint-related conditions. His special interests include total hip and knee replacement, hip fracture care, and geriatric orthopedics. He sees patients at the UAMS Health Orthopaedic Clinic located at 2 Shackelford W. Blvd. in Little Rock and at the UAMS Orthopaedic and Spine Clinic in North Little Rock.

Dr. Mears earned his medical degree and a Ph.D. degree in Neurobiology from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed a fellowship in orthopaedic traumatology at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland as well as a second fellowship in hip and knee replacement at the Mayo Clinic.

Prior to joining UAMS in 2015, Dr. Mears practiced at the Johns Hopkins University for ten years and served as Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Dr. Mears also served as the Division Chief of Adult Arthroplasty and Joint Reconstruction at the University of Florida in 2024. He returned to UAMS in January 2025.

Dr. Mears is actively involved in national orthopedic organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Association of American Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS). He is also a member of the prestigious Hip Society and Knee Society and has won the prestigious Jahnigen Award in geriatric medicine.

Dr. Mears is also an avid researcher with numerous peer-reviewed publications and invited presentations. His research interests include the clinical outcomes of geriatric patients and the biomechanics of fixation in osteoporotic bone.
