Area of Expertise: Trauma Care(Part of Orthopaedics)

When a traumatic injury occurs, most cases in Arkansas will be brought to UAMS Health. This includes things like facial trauma, crush injuries, traumatic spine injuries, injuries from natural disasters, and many other physical injuries that can require immediate care. That is because UAMS Medical Center is the only medical center in Arkansas recognized by the American College of Surgeons as a Level I Adult Trauma Center.

Our Level I Adult Trauma Center provides total care for every aspect of injury, from prevention through rehabilitation. It also has a major responsibility for providing leadership in education, research and system planning. UAMS Medical Center is also home to the first and only Comprehensive Stroke Center in Arkansas.

The Level I Adult Trauma Center at UAMS Health

The trauma center features a designated operating room for trauma cases, and patients needing X-rays or a CT scan can receive those in the Emergency Department with no need to transport them to the main hospital for imaging. Many of Arkansas’ top doctors are on staff at UAMS Health and are just a phone call away.

Through the enhanced facilities in our hospital, we have taken emergency and trauma medical care to a new level. We now offer our patients state-of-the-art life-saving expertise and technologies blended with a patient-friendly design, providing privacy and top-notch care that is vital to our patients and families in times of medical need.

Prepared for Any Injury

Many different specialties are involved in our Level I Adult Trauma Center, which is spearheaded by the UAMS Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. The trauma surgeons stay in the hospital 24 hours a day, ready to care for the most significantly injured patients.

When the American College of Surgeons certified UAMS Health as an adult Level I Adult Trauma Center, UAMS Health was put through a rigorous review process as we demonstrated that we can provide the highest level of trauma care to the most serious and urgent cases. When needed, our emergency and trauma doctors have immediate access to in-house specialists in these areas:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Blood Bank
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Facial Plastics
  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopaedics
  • Radiology
  • Trauma Surgery

The Goal of Trauma Care at UAMS Health

The goal of operating the only Level I Adult Trauma Center in the state of Arkansas is to be the flagship for adult trauma care in Arkansas. UAMS is leading the way in preventable injury and death through expert care, education, research and leadership.
