About Dr. Mustain
Clinical Biography
Dr. Mustain is board-certified in General and Colon & Rectal Surgery. He earned his medical degree at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He completed residency in General Surgery and a 2-year research fellowship at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center and Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, KY. His residency in Colon & Rectal Surgery was at University Hospitals-Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.
Dr. Mustain joined the faculty at UAMS in 2015.
A nationally recognized leader in da Vinci colorectal surgery, Dr. Mustain performs over 100 robotic procedures annually, including segmental colectomy, total colectomy, LAR/APR, rectopexy, TAMIS, stoma takedown, and others. With the adoption of 4th generation da Vinci technology, Dr. Mustain is able to offer a minimally invasive approach for more than 90% of elective colectomies and 85% of colorectal resections overall.
This high rate of da Vinci adoption has helped UAMS to become a leader nationally in quality outcomes following colorectal surgery. U.S. News & World Reports has recognized UAMS as High Performing in Colon Cancer Surgery 3 years running. The American College of Surgeons- National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (ACS-NSQIP) has designated UAMS as “Exemplary” (indicating outcomes in the top 10% of all NSQIP hospitals) for colorectal length of stay, surgical site infection, and post-operative morbidity.
Dr. Mustain lives in the Hillcrest neighborhood in Little Rock with his wife and two young boys. He sees patients in the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.
