Academic Biography
Dr. Gwendolyn Bryant-Smith, M.D., FACR is a nationally recognized breast imaging expert, educator, and patient centered care advocate who currently serves as Division Chief of Breast Imaging and Director of the Breast Center at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). She is also Director of the UAMS Mobile Mammography Program (Mammovan), through which she leads efforts to improve access to breast cancer screening in underserved and rural communities across Arkansas.
A Professor of Radiology at UAMS, Dr. Bryant-Smith has dedicated her career to clinical excellence, academic mentorship, and community impact. She previously served as Director of Breast Imaging at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System and has held several leadership roles at the national level, including her current position as Chair of the American College of Radiology (ACR) College Nominating Committee and member of the RSNA Nominating Committee. She is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, an honor that recognizes her sustained contributions to the field.
Dr. Bryant-Smith earned her medical degree and completed her residency and fellowship in breast imaging at UAMS. Over the years, she has directed the Breast Imaging Fellowship Program, mentored dozens of radiology trainees, and actively contributed to breast cancer research and policy, including serving as principal investigator on multiple grants supporting mobile mammography services.
Her service includes appointments to state and national task forces, including her gubernatorial appointment to the Arkansas Breast Cancer Research Program. A sought-after speaker, she has presented nationally and internationally on breast imaging, cancer disparities, and community-based outreach strategies. Her numerous awards include being named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and the 2022 Distinguished Honoree by the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Auxiliary.
Dr. Bryant-Smith’s career reflects her unwavering commitment to improving breast health outcomes through patient-centered care, innovation, and improved screening strategies.
