Also called: Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing with Sensory Testing; FEESST; Modified Barium Swallow Study; MBS
Typical swallow studies use modified barium to determine whether food or liquid is being aspirated, or entering a person’s lungs. At UAMS, we also use Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing with Sensory Testing (FEESST). FEEST is a state-of-the-art nonradioactive alternative to modified barium swallow studies. This exam allows for direct assessment of the motor and sensory aspects of the swallow. The benefits of FEESST are:
- Immediate results with convenient in-office procedure
- Practical recommendations for dietary and behavioral management
- Assistance in dietary upgrade or oral feeding for people who are on gastrostomy tube feedings
- Management of symptoms with appropriate swallowing rehabilitation
