COVID-19 Update

Before Coming to UAMS

If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, think you may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, or have tested positive for COVID-19, call the UAMS appointment center at (501) 686-8000 to reschedule your appointment. You may also ask if your appointment can be done by phone or video.

Patients who have had a COVID-19 infection may have in-person appointments at UAMS 21 days after infection or a positive COVID test, as long as your symptoms are improving. Please call the clinic where your appointment is scheduled if you have any questions about coming for an in-person visit. You may be able to have an appointment by phone or video while you are waiting for clearance for an in-person visit.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

UAMS has safety measures in place to protect our patients and employees. Everyone who comes to UAMS is required to wear a mask and pass a health screening before entering the building. You will also have your temperature taken. Please wear a clean mask to your clinic visit, and do not remove it until asked to do so by a UAMS employee.

Outpatient Visitor Guidelines

Beginning March 3, 2021, one person may come to your appointment with you. You may also include a friend or family member in your appointment by phone or video chat.

If you need a wheelchair from your car to your appointment, transport staff may be available at the main UAMS campus. Contact your clinic for more information.

Please visit our COVID-19 resources to learn more about what to expect at your appointment.

About Back and Neck Clinic

At the UAMS Health Back and Neck Clinic, our patients receive team-based care from both a physical therapist and a primary care physician who specializes in spine and sports injuries. We focus on what may be limiting your ability to do your normal activities. Then, we develop a plan to help you get as closely back to your normal activities as possible. If needed, we expand your care to include the other members of our spine team, like interventional pain anesthesiologists and fellowship-trained spine surgeons at UAMS Health.

Our Approach to Back and Neck Care

When someone experiences acute back or neck pain, they are usually given many tests, including an MRI. After all of those tests, around 80% of people are referred to physical therapy.

Our team has turned this process around. At the UAMS Health Back and Neck Clinic, after you see our doctor (and as long as there are no clinical red flags) you have an assessment by a physical therapist before going through any tests that you may not need. The process works like this:

  • A primary care physician who specializes in spine and sports injuries will discuss your issues with you and only order imaging if needed. If indicated you will see the physical therapist the same day and begin your rehabilitation.
  • Our physical therapists are specially trained in back issues. They will ask you questions and do a thorough evaluation and develop a personal plan for your recovery.
  • If a surgical or interventional pain referral is indicated, an appointment will be arranged with a fellowship-trained spine surgeon or interventional pain care anesthesiologist at UAMS Health.

Who Might Need Neck or Back Care?

You may need medical help for neck or back pain if:

  • The pain has lasted more than 72 hours without improvement.
  • If new back or neck symptoms are interrupting your sleep.
  • You have a hard time performing household tasks or participating in sports and leisure activities.
  • It is difficult for you to do your normal work because of the pain.

Appointments

Appointments are available the same or next business day following your appointment request. We strive to offer same-day appointments when possible. Referrals are not required unless required by your health insurance.
