Clinic History
UAMS Kids First in Little Rock was the original site during the research stage known as the Infant Health and Development Program. The program began as a national research project, one of eight such projects across the country, to determine the effects of early intervention for premature babies. The Little Rock site was the only one to continue serving very young, medically at-risk children when the research ended.
The clinic was originally located in a former church building with partitioned treatment rooms that served the community for 12 years. In 1999, the renovation of a nearby building was completed and the children moved into new treatment rooms. In 2012, the clinic moved to West Little Rock to be located with other UAMS programs. The new location features bright treatment rooms and safe outdoor play areas. The new location can serve 84 children and employs over 40 staff.
UAMS Kids First works in cooperation with local, area and state colleges to provide observation and training to nursing, early childhood, special education, dietetics, therapy, public health, and social work students. The Department of Pediatrics at UAMS also makes UAMS Kids First a part of the teaching experience for pediatric residents.
