How to watch for warning signs and causes. Notice behavioral changes. Pay attention to sudden shifts in mood, increased secrecy or withdrawal from family and friends. Monitor school and work performance. Look for a decline in grades, frequent absences or job loss. Watch for financial issues. Be alert if they frequently ask for money, steal or sell belongings. Observe sleep patterns. Irregular sleep, excessive drowsiness or insomnia can be red flags. Track social circles. New friends who seem secretive or encourage risky behavior can indicate trouble. Recognize physical signs. Unexplained weight loss, poor hygiene, bloodshot eyes or frequent nose bleeds may signal substance use. Identify emotional instability. Increased irritability, aggression or anxiety could be warning signs. Consider underlying causes. Trauma, mental health struggles, peer pressure or family history of addiction can contribute. Trust your instincts. If something feels off address it early rather than waiting for things to worsen. Stay hopeful long-term recovery is possible with commitment and support.
