Clinical Resource: Transforming GI & Liver Care in Arkansas

Description

Dr. Mauricio Garcia joined UAMS Health as Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology with a clear mission: to build a team capable of delivering the most advanced, specialized care in gastroenterology, hepatology, and endoscopy for patients across Arkansas. In this video, Dr. Garcia shares his vision for expanding and elevating care across the entire spectrum of digestive and liver diseases. Under his leadership, UAMS has developed a comprehensive gastroenterology program, including the addition of neurogastroenterology and the integration of new technology to improve diagnosis and treatment. The hepatology program has also grown significantly and now includes the only transplant-certified hepatologists in the state, offering care for all types of chronic liver disease, liver cancer, and liver transplantation, along with post-transplant support. UAMS Health has also launched the state’s only inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) program led by a specialist with advanced training in IBD care. This program provides access to the latest biologic therapies for conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and is the only center in Arkansas offering intestinal ultrasound at the point of care. In the area of advanced endoscopy, UAMS now provides a full suite of highly specialized, minimally invasive procedures. These include ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, and third space endoscopy techniques such as POEM, U-POEM, and endoscopic submucosal dissection. These groundbreaking procedures allow patients to avoid major surgeries by offering outpatient solutions for conditions that once required complex operations. Dr. Garcia’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and patient-centered care is transforming how digestive and liver diseases are treated in Arkansas and beyond.

So why I decided to join UAMS is because  I have offered the opportunity to become the chair of the gastroenterology and hepatology  division. So why I decided to be the chair of the GI division is to be able to build this team that  can offer this highly specialized gastroenterology hepatology and endoscopy care for the patients in  Arkansas. So currently at the gastroenterology and hepatology division we can take care of any  of your needs in gastroenterology. We have been able to develop some of the most important  programs for the state and we can start with in general gastroenterology we are adding neuro  gastroenterology to our list of diseases that we can take care. We are adding new technology to  take care of these patients with the addition of innovation through a very comprehensive care  for our patients in the general gastroenterology population. Through this we have been also able  to grow the hepatology program that includes the liver transplant program. We have the only  transplant certified providers in the whole state of Arkansas and we can take care of all the  spectrum of liver diseases uh that we can see. We offer from chronic liver disease care to liver  transplantation and post-liver transplant care. We have a very comprehensive team that can take  you for the care of your patients with chronic liver disease and we collaborate with many other  specialties into those areas. We have been also able to create the program for inflammatory bowel  disease in the state. We have the only specialist in the state with training into inflammatory  bowel disease. We can offer our patients access to the most newest biologic therapies for these  type of diseases including ulcerative colitis,
Crohn’s disease, and we have the top-notch  technology to monitor these patients by offering the point of care ultrasound intestinal  ultrasound to our patients and we are the only ones in the state that can offer that kind of  technology. Also we are the only one that have developed a true advanced endoscopy practice  and we can offer uh treatment for highly complex endoscopic therapies through endos ERCP,  endoscopic ultrasound, but also we can offer third space endoscopic procedures and among those we  can do submucosal dissections we can do POEMS, UPOEMS and this actually has revolutionized  the care in gastroenterology for patients that in the past actually needed a procedure  like a surgery for a resection of a polyp, taking part of their colon or for small cancers  in the colon or the esophagus nowadays with a outpatient procedure we can do the intervention  and prevent them from needing a surgery.
