When Tom Heau of Hot Springs Village was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and needed a bone marrow transplant, his wife Deb said she could see the light in his eyes dim. But Tom perked up when he found out the international leader in the treatment of his cancer was just down the road at the world-renowned Myeloma Center at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.
Today, Tom is five years cancer-free.
The 27th Gala for Life, the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute’s largest fundraiser, benefits the bone marrow transplant program – the only transplant program in the state treating cancer patients like Tom.
“From the welcome desk to Dr. Thanendrarajan to the nursing staff to the lab people, they treated me like I was the most important person in the universe. I always felt like I was getting the best treatment anyone could ask for.”
