How to Support a Loved One in Recovery Without Losing Yourself

Transcript

How to help your loved one with recovery.  Educate yourself. Learn about substance use in recovery to better support your loved  one. Set healthy boundaries. Support them without enabling destructive behaviors.  Seek your own support. Join a group like Al-Anon or seek therapy to manage  your own emotions. Practice self-care. Engage in exercise meditation or hobbies to reduce  stress. Communicate with patience. Speak with understanding rather than blame or frustration.  Expect ups and downs. Recovery is not linear, setbacks don’t mean failure. Acknowledge small  wins, encourage their progress to help build confidence. Maintain your own balance, don’t let  their substance abuse consume your entire life. Model healthy coping strategies, show them how  to handle stress in positive ways. Stay hopeful, long-term recovery is possible with commitment and support.
