Educators play a unique and important role in a child’s life. They interact with students daily, often spending more time with them than other adults in their lives. They can support students in building positive habits for mental health in a meaningful way.
In a school setting, educators might observe potential signs of a mental health concern, or a student might confide in them about their struggles or symptoms. They do not need to address a child’s mental health concerns alone, but their support can make a big difference in a child’s life.
An educator should not try to diagnose and/or treat mental health concerns, but they can teach students habits and strategies to improve mental and emotional wellbeing as well as observe behaviors, document potential patterns, and connect students with the right supports. Facilitating communication with support staff can help ensure students receive the most appropriate care for their situation.
