Dr. Harter's Academic Background

Academic Biography

Dr. Scott B. Harter, MD, FACR is an Associate Professor of Radiology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), specializing in breast imaging. A board-certified radiologist and Fellow of the American College of Radiology, Dr. Harter has built a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in academic medicine, private practice, and healthcare leadership.

After graduating summa cum laude from Louisiana Tech University and earning his Doctor of Medicine from Louisiana State University School of Medicine Dr. Harter completed a residency in radiology at Wake Forest University, followed by a fellowship in magnetic resonance imaging.

For nearly three decades, Dr. Harter served as a staff radiologist with the Baptist Health Medical System, where he also held numerous leadership roles including Chief of Radiology, President and CEO of Radiology Consultants of Little Rock, and Medical Director for multiple imaging departments across the state. His leadership extended beyond clinical care, with impactful work in quality improvement, patient safety, and system-wide imaging standardization.

At UAMS, Dr. Harter is involved in education, serving as the Breast Imaging Residency Education Curriculum Chief and as a frequent lecturer for residents and medical students. His teaching covers a broad range of topics—from breast imaging to the job market in radiology, potential practice evaluation, and interviewing techniques. He has been instrumental in creating opportunities for radiology residents to participate in national professional meetings and in establishing the Resident and Fellow Section of the Arkansas Radiological Society.

Dr. Harter’s professional contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including Fellowship in the American College of Radiology and awards for excellence in patient safety. He has also held leadership positions in state and national radiology organizations, including serving as President of the Arkansas Radiological Society.

Outside of clinical practice, Dr. Harter is committed to fostering diversity, mentorship, and professional development within the radiology community, helping prepare the next generation of physicians to excel both in medicine and in leadership.
