Dr. Dalvi's Academic Background
Academic Biography
Dr. Sam Dalvi received Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in molecular biology and history from Auburn University, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He then attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 2005. He completed a residency in internal medicine at UAB from 2005 to 2008 and a rheumatology fellowship at NYU Langone Medical Center from 2010 to 2012.
In 2012, he joined the faculty as an assistant professor in the Division of Rheumatology at Duke Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. While at Duke, he co-led the Lupus Clinic and was selected to participate in the Duke Faculty Development Academy, Education Scholars Branch.
In 2015, Dr. Dalvi returned to Birmingham to join the Division of Clinical Rheumatology and Immunology at UAB. There, he served as clinical course director for the musculoskeletal module for pre-clinical medical students. He also served as a clinical skills scholar for the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course and a learning communities mentor for medical students at the UAB School of Medicine.
He championed telehealth services within the division, working to expand rheumatologic care to rural areas of Alabama. He also initiated the division’s virtual scribe program, which improved physician well-being and increased faculty productivity. He remained at UAB until late 2023, when he was recruited to UAMS.
Dr. Dalvi currently serves as both division director of Rheumatology and Immunology and program director of the Rheumatology Fellowship at UAMS. His clinical interests include severe forms of lupus with renal, cardiac and neurologic manifestations; temporal/giant cell arteritis; ANCA-associated vasculitis; cryoglobulinemic vasculitis; crystalline arthropathies such as gout and calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease; and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. He also treats rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, scleroderma and antisynthetase syndrome.
He is currently developing a gout clinic at UAMS, which will serve patients with crystalline arthritis, including gout, calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD) and hydroxyapatite deposition disease (HADD). The clinic will become a regional center of excellence for gout in the south-central United States and will support the development of a gout registry for research.

I can't stress enough how worried I was about the amount of time I was without my meds and the possible damage to my organs that might of happened during that time. The provider explained to me a treatment plan and what they thoughts were and how I felt about it and if I had any concerns. They were amazing!
