Dr. Omair Ali is a comprehensive ophthalmologist at the UAMS Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute. He cares for patients with a wide range of eye conditions and specializes in cataract surgery, including complex cases. Alongside his practice here, he treats patients at free clinics around the country and on surgical trips abroad.

Academic Biography

Omair Badshah Ali, M.D., M.A., is associate professor of ophthalmology and director of community and global outreach at the UAMS Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, where he teaches residents and leads the institute’s community and international outreach work.

His international service has included clinical care, surgery, resident education, faculty development, and outreach infrastructure-building in Ghana, Rwanda, Burundi, Haiti, Guatemala, India, and Pakistan. He has also established and supported free eye clinics serving underserved communities in Arkansas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida.

Dr. Ali's Research

Dr. Ali’s research spans behavioral neuroscience, retinal disease, refractive surgery, ocular pathology, and glaucoma.

At Indiana University, he investigated hormonal influences on parental behavior in dark-eyed juncos and examined the behavioral and neuroanatomical effects of developmental drug exposure and nerve injury. At Massachusetts Eye and Ear, he completed a master’s thesis comparing LASIK and LASEK outcomes.

At the Pat and Willard Walker Eye Research Center, part of the UAMS Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, he studied aspirin’s effects in experimental dry age-related macular degeneration, investigated conjunctival biopsy findings in sarcoidosis, and evaluated moxifloxacin toxicity in human iris pigment epithelial cells. More recently, his work has focused on angle-closure glaucoma epidemiology in Ghana.
