About Dr. Newhart

Clinical Biography

Hamilton Newhart, M.D., is a board-certified, fellowship-trained sports medicine physician and assistant professor in the UAMS Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation.  He provides comprehensive care for sports-related and other musculoskeletal injuries to help restore movement, improve function, optimize performance, and reduce the risk of re-injury. His care includes treatment for everything from sprains and strains to broken bones and arthritis.

Dr. Newhart treats athletes and patients of all skill levels — from high school and collegiate athletes to weekend warriors and others who want to maintain an active lifestyle. He currently serves as the Head Team Physicians for the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Athletics and Assistant Team Physician for the University of Arkansas Little Rock Trojans Athletics.

Dr. Newhart graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, where he was awarded a four-year distinguished scholarship. He earned his medical degree from UAMS, graduating with honors in research.  He completed his internship and residency at the Baptist Health/UAMS Family Medicine program in North Little Rock, where he was recognized as its Most Outstanding Resident in 2024. That year, he also received the Best Resident Award from the Arkansas Medical Society.

Following residency, Dr. Newhart completed a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Henry Ford Health in Detroit, Michigan. As part of his training, he worked with many of Detroit’s professional sports teams including the Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons and its G league affiliate Motor City Cruise, as well as the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings. He also served as the head team physician for Dearborn High School and provided sports medicine coverage for Oakland University, Wayne State University, and Lawrence Technical University.

My biggest problem with the doctor is he kept interrupting me. He would ask a question and I would be trying to answer as succinctly as possible (it's a long-term problem with many details) and he would interrupt my answer and ask another question. He generally seemed in a hurry.

He let me go through all of the options several times until I made a decision. He was very understanding and did not judge my decision at all.

I was very excited at the end of my visit with Dr. Hamilton Newhart. He listened to my concerns and he believed me. He examined my toe area and explained to me the cause of pain I was experiencing in another part of my toe that had been injured as well. The break was healing just fine but there were ligaments that were very painful. He recommended a device for surf tow. My toe has been feeling so much better. I have been able to enjoy walking again with the seniors and alone. Dr. Newhart was very personable, kind, friendly, and concerned. I felt that he wanted my foot better as much as I did! Thank you UAMS and staff! I have had great experiences and the BEST care at UAMS.

He'll never down here didn't listen well to my concerns and make me feel like I shouldn't be concerned about my condition at all. I was taking back how cold he was and detached.

This was my first visit. First time I ever had a cortisone shot. Very good explanation and care. After my primary care visit she submitted for another X-ray and we will go over that when I come back in a month. Thank you.
