About the Cancer Genetics Clinic
Cancer impacts us all and unfortunately is common. All cancer is genetic, however, most of the time cancer occurs at random often from environmental factors. As many as 10% of people may have an “inherited” cancer, which means gene mutations were passed from parents to children placing them at higher risks to develop cancer. This is where a cancer genetics evaluation can be helpful in determining if a cancer could have family implications. When we know that someone is at risk for a possible inherited cancer, we can potentially prevent it from happening through increased screenings.
Our specialized team of genetic professionals is here to help. For patients who have not undergone genetic testing, you can expect a thorough evaluation by our genetic counselors who will discuss your personal risk factors and family history of cancer. Based on this information, the genetic counselor would then be able to determine if you are a candidate for genetic testing and whether you may meet national guidelines. If you have previously undergone genetic testing our genetic counselors will be able to review the test results and discuss preventative measures that can improve your health outcomes.
After a cancer diagnosis, genetic testing may be recommended for you by your treatment team. This is because often genetic testing can address why you developed cancer. Genetic testing can also inform potential cancer treatment options.
When should a person consider genetic testing? Below are a few indications that may suggest you or your family could have a hereditary cancer genetic condition.
- Cancer diagnosed at an unusually young age (example, colon cancer diagnosed before age 50)
- Multiple close family members with the same type of cancer or related cancers (example, breast and ovarian cancer)
- Two or more primary cancer diagnoses in the same individual (example, breast cancer and history of ovarian cancer in one person)
- Rare cancers or unusual tumors (example, male breast cancer, schwannomas, pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma)
- Presence of other features associated with an inherited cancer syndrome (ex: multiple colon polyps)
