Superior Mesenteric Stenosis (SMAS) is a very rare condition of the digestive system that causes a blockage of the small intestine, specifically the duodenum.
The superior mesenteric artery is normally separated from the duodenum by a fatty cushion. SMAS occurs when that cushion becomes smaller due to a few common factors, including recovery from scoliosis or spinal surgery.
