Condition: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Also called: Heartburn

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic condition where stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the esophagus, irritating its lining. Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD — it’s a burning sensation in the chest that usually occurs after eating or when lying down.

Common Symptoms:

  • Heartburn
  • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Chronic cough
  • Hoarseness or sore throat
  • Worsens when lying down or after large meals
