Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic condition where stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the esophagus, irritating its lining. Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD — it’s a burning sensation in the chest that usually occurs after eating or when lying down.
Common Symptoms:
- Heartburn
- Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
- Chest pain
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- Chronic cough
- Hoarseness or sore throat
- Worsens when lying down or after large meals
