Clinical Resource: Understanding Colorectal Cancer & Your Treatment Options

Description

A new diagnosis of colorectal cancer can be overwhelming — but you’re not alone. In this video, Dr. Jamie Cannon, colorectal surgeon at UAMS Health, offers insight, clarity, and hope to patients facing this diagnosis. She addresses common fears and myths, including misconceptions about survival rates and the need for a permanent colostomy bag. Dr. Cannon explains how most colorectal cancers are highly treatable, and in many cases, curable. With advancements in both surgery and medical treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, some patients may not even require surgery at all. At UAMS, each patient receives a personalized treatment plan from a collaborative team of specialists — including surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists — all working together for the best possible outcome. Dr. Cannon also emphasizes the life-saving importance of colorectal cancer screening, especially starting at age 45. Preventative measures like colonoscopy can detect and remove precancerous polyps before cancer ever develops.

Transcript

When I see patients with a new diagnosis of colorectal cancer they’re at a very vulnerable time in their life and people come to see me and  they’re scared about this new diagnosis. I think there are also a lot of myths out there about  colorectal cancer. A lot of people think that means that they’re either not going to survive  or they’re going to end up with a colostomy and so I really try and reassure people  that most of the time that’s not the case. Colorectal cancer is a very curable disease and  the treatments are generally well tolerated and
it’s very uncommon for someone to have to  require a permanent ostomy bag when they’re getting treated for colorectal cancer. So a lot  of my visit is just explaining kind of what the treatment plan is going to be and what the pathway  is going to look like for them going forward and offering that reassurance. We have a number  of different things that we can use to treat colorectal cancer. Myself as a surgeon obviously  the approach that I’m offering is surgery uh but we offer that as part of a combined team we  work with medical oncologists and radiation oncologists to come up with the best treatment plan for each individual patient. In addition to surgical advancements in the treatment of  colorectal cancer we’re also seeing great strides in medical advancements as well um some  select patients are treated with chemotherapy and radiation prior to any surgery and we are  seeing these treatments be incredibly effective
so effective that some patients find that they  don’t even need surgery after undergoing these treatments because the tumor just shrinks away.  One of the things I really try and impress upon my patients is the importance of colorectal  cancer screening for the vast majority of patients colorectal cancer is actually a  preventable disease. Colonoscopy which is currently recommended to start doing at age 45 can  identify polyps and if we identify those polyps we can remove them at the time of colonoscopy and  prevent someone from ever getting a colorectal cancer. So if you find yourself in a position  where you’ve been diagnosed with a colorectal condition that may require surgery please feel free to reach out to us either your primary care physician or your gastroenterologists  can refer you to the colorectal department here at UAMS or you’re more than welcome to just  call and make an appointment yourself.
