Total Talus Replacement at UAMS | Advanced Ankle Surgery for Severe Injury & Arthritis

Transcript

So one advanced technique that we’ve been able to bring to UAMS is called a total talus replacement. It’s not very common. It’s not very often needed but when it is it makes a big difference. Some patients lose their talus either from a lack of  blood supply or a trauma. Some have really bad arthritis. Some may have had an ankle replacement that didn’t go so well or that’s just plain worn out and in those situations there may not be enough bone to replace it or to treat it in a way that’s functional. So with the total talus replacement the whole bone is replaced with a somewhat artificial bone that’s made out of metal and it pairs up with an ankle replacement to allow
for continued motion and a better walking pattern after the replacement is performed.
