Daren Bobb:
Well, the NICU at Mercy Hospital in Rogers got its first delivery of donated breast milk from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Milk Bank. The UAMS Milk Bank focuses on the health of moms and newborns in Arkansas by encouraging and supporting breastfeeding. This is the first facility of its kind in this area. It helps ensure a ready supply of donor milk for sick and vulnerable infants in the NICU. Milk is delivered around the state and shortens the time it takes regional hospitals to wait for critical milk supplies.
NICU Provider:
Our moms who have these babies are typically early — they have their babies early and their milk supply is small the first several days, and they’re working on building their own breastmilk up. And until their milk is available, we use donor milk for these critical babies. And that really gives them the best protection against illness.
Bobb:
Last year, Mercy Hospital opened the Northwest Arkansas Milk Depot for women to donate milk that is then sent for screening and nutritional analysis.
