Dr. Mauricio Garcia is the Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UAMS Health. As a gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist, he specializes in the care of patients with chronic liver diseases and liver cancer, with a particular focus on:
- Alcohol-related liver disease
- Metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (fatty liver disease)
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer)
- Liver transplantation
Dr. Garcia is passionate about helping patients who have battled liver disease for years—providing life-changing treatments, including transplantation, and seeing them regain their quality of life.

My name is Mauricio Garcia. I’m the current chief of the gastroenterology and hepatology division. I’m a gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist. I do specialize in liver transplantation, liver disease, chronic liver disease care. My main interest into hepatology is to take care of chronic liver diseases and among those chronic liver diseases I mostly specialize into alcohol-related liver disease, metabolic associated steatotic liver diseases which is what we commonly known as fatty liver diseases and its consequences and also I’m very interested into liver cancer especially hepatocellular carcinoma. The most rewarding part of the practice I do is actually to take care of patients that are chronically ill for a long time that have had debilitating liver diseases for good amount of time that has consumed also part of their life and their families and when we are able to offer them treatments that are can offer cure to those diseases offer them procedures like liver transplantation that are life changing and see them
afterwards how they recover, uh their quality of life and how they come back into clinic and how we establish those relationship for long term is what is the most rewarding thing about my practice. Fun fact about myself is I’m actually a drummer player so things that I like to do outside my practice here at I like to play the drums and among the other things that I am, I’m a avid Star Wars collector so I’ve been collecting Star Wars for the last 30 years.
