Screening access is an important mission for me. And so, in my 10 years of being here as the Director of Breast Imaging, I’ve really focused on: how can we improve access to screening? How can we do things that meet patients where they are?
So, we have three modes of screening access available.
The third floor of the cancer institute is our on-campus breast center. And not only do we give same-day, in-person results for both screening and diagnostic studies—which is really helpful for those patients that live more than an hour away—we also do same-day biopsies for those patients that live an hour away. Or, if we know definitely by looking at the imaging features something is a cancer, we will offer same-day biopsy results.
Our second point of screening access is the location in the gynecology clinic off campus—the Midtown location. And we wanted to combine services. Not every patient can take multiple days from work for different doctor’s visits. So you can combine your gynecology exam with your mammogram. And we give same-day phone calls to every single patient that gets a screening mammogram at that location.
Our third access point is the mobile van. It travels the state of Arkansas, so we’re truly meeting patients where they are.
We also offer a late Tuesday evening clinic once a month and a Saturday screening clinic once a month in the breast center. So we have really worked to make sure access to get a screening mammogram is not an issue for patients.
