Clinical Resource: Focal Therapy & Early Detection for Prostate Cancer

Description

Explore the latest innovations in prostate cancer treatment with Dr. Marcelo Bigarella, a fellowship-trained urologic oncology surgeon at UAMS. In this video, Dr. Bigarella introduces focal therapy — a cutting-edge, minimally invasive option for select patients with localized prostate cancer. This technique offers an alternative to surgery or radiation, helping patients preserve quality of life while effectively targeting the tumor. Dr. Bigarella also explains the importance of early detection through PSA screening and highlights how next-generation imaging, like PSMA PET scans, is revolutionizing prostate cancer diagnosis by improving accuracy and potentially avoiding unnecessary biopsies. With nearly 1 in 10 men developing prostate cancer in their lifetime, proactive screening and personalized care are more crucial than ever. Learn how UAMS is leading the way in prostate cancer innovation — from diagnosis to advanced, less invasive treatments.

Transcript

One also very exciting thing we have here now at  is focal therapy for prostate cancer meaning that some patients might benefit from a more minimally  invasive technique to fight cancer instead of the procedure, the surgery, or the radiation if the  tumor is small enough and amenable for that that’s something we can offer for patients here. Prostate  cancer is one of the most common cancer in men, so we know that almost 1 in 10 men will have  some sort of prostate cancer during their life, so we do see a lot of patients here with prostate  cancer. The thing with the prostate cancer that is not usually a symptomatic cancer meaning patients  sometimes they don’t have any symptoms related to the cancer although the cancer is already  there because it grows just so slow that take couple years before they develop symptoms and  how can we diagnose prostate cancer early on, by doing prostate cancer screening and making  sure you see your doctor and discuss your prostate cancer risk so we can address those risk before  situation gets out of control. Most of patients they come here with elevated PSAs, meaning that  PC, primary care doctors, they already screened for prostate cancer and once the PSA the protein  that expressed by prostate is elevated they refer to us, so we can do that workup to know if that  is just because they have a big prostate or that is because they have prostate cancer. One of  the most interesting things about research I was involved with next generation imaging for  prostate cancer using PSMA pad to detect and to diagnose and more accurately prostate cancer.  So I think that’s a very important field because then again we might spare patients going to  biopsies that were unnecessary to start with.
