Treatment/Procedure: Smoking Cessation

Also called: Tobacco Cessation

Tobacco is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States. Currently, almost 23% of Arkansans smoke cigarettes and around 5,800 Arkansans die from a tobacco-related illness every year. At UAMS Health, we see the negative effects of tobacco use and make every effort to reach those needing help to quit both in our clinics and in the community. Your health is our number one priority, and quitting tobacco has proven to be the most important health change you can make.

You are much more likely to quit tobacco long-term when you work with a tobacco treatment specialist, according to research. Community members and patients who seek care at any UAMS Health location across Arkansas may receive help from a tobacco treatment specialist by self-referral or through a referral by their health care provider. Our tobacco treatment specialists provide virtual group classes and one-on-one consultations in the clinic setting and by phone.

One-on-One Help From a Tobacco Treatment Specialist

What Does a Tobacco Treatment Specialist Do?

  1. Gathers information about your unique tobacco experience and history.
  2. Helps set realistic goals and creates a workable quit plan.
  3. Identifies cessation options and makes recommendations for medication/nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to discuss with your health care provider.
  4. Maintains contact with you to ensure proper use of medications/NRT, address struggles, offers encouragement and support throughout the quit journey.

How to Get Started with a Tobacco Treatment Specialist

Self-Referrals

Call the message-only UAMS Tobacco Cessation Help Line at 501- 526-5448 and leave your name, date of birth and phone number. A tobacco treatment specialist will return the call within three business days to assist with a cessation plan and/or enroll you in the virtual group classes. You can access a list of our tobacco cessation specialists on the class registration page.

Health Care Provider Referrals

If you have an appointment in any of the UAMS Health clinics, let your health care provider know you would like a referral to a tobacco treatment specialist and you will be contacted soon.

Group Classes

Group classes are on hiatus until further notice. However, one-on-one personalized virtual visits are still available.

Our tobacco treatment specialists offer virtual group classes to help support your quitting goals. Get more information and learn how to sign up by visiting the patient education class page.
