A mastectomy is a surgical operation that may remove some or all of one or both breasts (double mastectomy or bilateral mastectomy). Unlike when a surgeon removes just the tumor (lumpectomy), a mastectomy removes all of the breast tissues, and in many cases, the nipple and areola.
Martha Murphy carried the BRCA2 gene mutation and her daughters found out they did too. The Murphys have been and continue to be treated at UAMS.
