The shape and position of the breasts change with age, pregnancy, and weight fluctuations. They follow a predictable pattern of drooping (ptosis), deflation, and flattening/widening. To correct these changes, the surgeon lifts the nipple/areola to a new, higher position, while tightening the skin envelope to create a more youthful appearing breast. Breast lift, or mastopexy, may be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation to improve the breast shape while simultaneously adding back volume.
