Comprehensive Care
In 2018, UAMS Health became Arkansas’ first Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC), certified through The Joint Commission (TJC). This certification ranks among the most stringent certifications a healthcare institution can strive to achieve. Comprehensive Stroke Center designation is only for those institutions with the specific ability to receive and treat the most complex stroke cases. By maintaining this certification, UAMS demonstrates its commitment to providing the most comprehensive stroke care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to all Arkansans.
- Stroke disproportionally affects the most vulnerable populations and Arkansas is no exception. With a high incidence of hypertension, diabetes and obesity in Arkansas, the risk for stroke is high in the state.
- In 2005, Arkansas was ranked 3rd in the nation for stroke mortality. Through several years of dedicated care, research, innovation, and statewide collaboration, Arkansas has moved that ranking to 9th in the nation, according to CDC statistics for 2022 data. (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/stroke_mortality/stroke.htm).
- UAMS treats all types of strokes, including ischemic stroke (caused by a clot in the brain) and hemorrhagic strokes (caused by a blood vessel rupture in the brain). In 2023, of the almost 550 stroke patients treated at UAMS, approximately 83% were ischemic and 17% were hemorrhagic in cause. (AHA-GWTG)
