About Dr. Cox

Clinical Biography

Dr. Cox is a Fayetteville native and Fayetteville High School alumnus. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology at Auburn University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He completed medical school in Little Rock at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences where he received multiple scholarships and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, a medical school honor society. Upon completion of his medical degree, Dr. Cox remained at UAMS to complete his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery. During his residency he received several awards, including being named the UAMS Resident of the Year in 2004.

Dr. Cox and his family then traveled to San Francisco to complete fellowship specialty training in shoulder, elbow, and sports medicine. He trained with several world-renowned surgeons including those who first reported the ability to repair rotator cuff tears arthroscopically in the 1980s as well as the designers of the most common shoulder replacement system used in the world.

During his training and in his practice in Fayetteville, Dr. Cox has worked extensively with high school, collegiate, and professional athletes. He is a team physician for the Arkansas Razorbacks and is an orthopaedic consultant for the LPGA tour. Dr. Cox has operated on current members of the MLB, NFL, PGA, LPGA, USTA, Bassmasters/FLW, LPGA, and USA Track and Field.

Dr. Cox has a thirst for continued education, development, and leading cutting edge techniques in shoulder and elbow surgery. He holds 11 patents, and has developed products for shoulder and elbow bracing and surgical implants and published a book on little league baseball injuries. Additionally, he is a consultant, advisor, and instructor for multiple orthopaedic companies. He is board-certified fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, and the Arkansas Orthopaedic Society and others.

In January 2020, Dr. Cox’s practice for over a decade, The Shoulder Center of Arkansas, became UAMS Health | Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine. Dr. Cox now serves as the Section Chief for UAMS Orthopaedics in Northwest Arkansas. His goal is to transform health care delivery in Northwest Arkansas.

[NAME - PA] (sp?) was Excellent! He shared more information than in past appointments and educated me on what Dr. Cox believes might be causing the new pain by showing in detail the x-ray/scan images (I am a visual learner) I had been experiencing since [DATE]. [NAME] impressed me especially with his Emotional Intelligence as he was sweet and patient in dealing with high anxiety & adhd patient!!! If he Is a PA then I hope you all encourage him to continue to become a doctor! I believed he was a doctor! :) He's his own person but after meeting Dr. Cox he could become Dr. Cox's Mini me. :) Mentorship helps us continue to pass on wisdom and legacy to the younger generations - not sure it happens as much as it once did. I'm always free to do FREE workshops on Emotional Intelligence - my way of giving back. Better yet, encourage [NAME] and [NAME] to develop and lead a staff Lunch and Learn to increase their value the to clinic! Now feedback on Dr. Cox: The moment he walked into the room, I knew he was my kind of doctor! Very welcoming, personable, fun - I was very impressed. Sidenote: he had been the doctor my surgeon in Benton (broke shoulder visiting my Mom in Benton) referred me to but I did not get assigned to him back in [DATE]. Appreciated when he shared that in the long run coming in for a 2nd opinion actually worked out better than being my initial doctor, because he could review all of my health issues and provide a better Insight. Bottom line, I will be referring him to everyone who needs an ortho (shoulder) surgeon!!! Again, over the last 4 years I have seen many other doctors (Fayetteville ENT, Washington Regional Neurologist (surgeon), PT Vertigo expert, Highlands Oncologist, and many UAMS doctors! So, I believe this feedback has merit on which doctors not only are excellent in their specialties but are exceptional with the gift of bedside manners (EQ)!!! ENCOURAGE the Following UAMS Doctors to create online workshops sharing the importance of EQ with Patients!!! : [NAME], [NAME], Wesley Cox and [NAME] in Little Rock are the BEST!!! ALL have excellent Emotional Intelligence and Patient Care Hearts!!! I have been so blessed and hopefully I won't need to ever return but if I do, I know I will be treated with exceptional care! P.S. AI Robots can never replace them! :)

The PA spent time going over the MRI in great detail. We never felt like anyone was in a hurry and they were more than willing to visit as long as we wanted.
