About Dr. Emmett
Clinical Biography
Susan D. Emmett, M.D., MPH, is an otolaryngologist and public health-trained researcher who holds four grants from the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Emmett comes to UAMS from Duke University School of Medicine where she was an assistant professor of surgery and assistant research professor of global health. At the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, she will lead the new Center for Hearing Health Equity. Along with her passion for research, tackling issues related to hearing loss and hearing health equity in the state of Arkansas, Dr. Emmett will also spend time performing cochlear implant surgery at UAMS.
Dr. Emmett is also the founder and director of the Global HEAR (Hearing Loss Evaluation, Advocacy and Research) Collaborative.

Academic Biography
Dr. Susan D. Emmett is an associate professor in the UAMS College of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and has a secondary appointment in the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health.
After earning her Bachelor of Arts in molecular biology at Princeton University, Dr. Emmett earned her medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. She attended Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for her residency in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery. She then earned her Master of Public Health and received postdoctoral fellowship training from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Emmett's Research
Susan D. Emmett, M.D., MPH, is an otolaryngologist and public health-trained researcher who holds four grants from the National Institutes of Health who has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Emmett will lead the new Center for Hearing Health Equity for the organization. As one of the most successful NIH-funded ENT surgeons and researchers in the country, she will help UAMS quickly become a leader in research involving hearing health disparities both in Arkansas and abroad. Her primary research focus is related to hearing loss and its causes as well as health disparities related to hearing loss. A main focus of her research is to help improve access to care for people, particularly children, in underserved areas. This research aims to identify those who are at risk of developing hearing loss or are already experiencing it but haven’t been diagnosed, and help them easily access affordable preventive care and treatment.
