COVID-19 Update
Before Coming to UAMS
If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, think you may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, or have tested positive for COVID-19, call the UAMS appointment center at (501) 686-8000 to reschedule your appointment. You may also ask if your appointment can be done by phone or video.
Patients who have had a COVID-19 infection may have in-person appointments at UAMS 21 days after infection or a positive COVID test, as long as your symptoms are improving. Please call the clinic where your appointment is scheduled if you have any questions about coming for an in-person visit. You may be able to have an appointment by phone or video while you are waiting for clearance for an in-person visit.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
UAMS has safety measures in place to protect our patients and employees. Everyone who comes to UAMS is required to wear a mask and pass a health screening before entering the building. You will also have your temperature taken. Please wear a clean mask to your clinic visit, and do not remove it until asked to do so by a UAMS employee.
Outpatient Visitor Guidelines
Beginning March 3, 2021, one person may come to your appointment with you. You may also include a friend or family member in your appointment by phone or video chat.
If you need a wheelchair from your car to your appointment, transport staff may be available at the main UAMS campus. Contact your clinic for more information.
Please visit our COVID-19 resources to learn more about what to expect at your appointment.

The Story of Our Clinic
“A child clinic in a mall– who ever heard of such a thing?” It’s true! The UAMS Kids First clinic in Newport proves that it can be done. The enthusiastic Jackson County Industrial Developer showed the UAMS Kids First team the former train station, the vacant movie house, and a long-gone grocery store, but all proved to be unsatisfactory space. Then came the unlikely mall suggestion, which with suitable renovation, would do just fine. The playground was a bit of a challenge, but with some fencing and soft ground cover, the former parking lot was transformed.
UAMS Kids First in Newport works in cooperation with local, area and state colleges to provide observation and training to nursing, early childhood and special education students.
Appointments
Evaluation for enrollment at Kids First requires a referral from the child’s primary care physician.
Through the intake process, our interprofessional team of early childhood professionals, occupational, speech, and physical therapists, dietitians, and nurses works with families to conduct evaluations and collect information regarding the child and family’s strengths and needs. Results from the assessments are reviewed by the Kids First team to determine eligibility for services.
