Condition: Voice, Airway and Swallowing Disorders

Voice and swallowing disorders can greatly limit your ability to eat, drink or communicate comfortably. And these disorders may be caused by many different factors, events, physical illnesses and diseases. The vast majority of voice and swallowing problems are not life-threatening and are easily treated.

If you are having trouble swallowing or having issues with your voice, our doctors are dedicated to the evaluation, treatment, and management of voice and swallowing disorders. Our goal is to provide you with the best treatment options available to preserve the highest level of voice and swallowing function.

At UAMS, the specialists in voice and swallowing treat a broad range of conditions affecting the larynx. These include:

  • Chronic hoarseness
  • Vocal cord nodules
  • Reflux
  • Vocal cord paralysis
  • Spasmodic dysphonia
  • Singing difficulties
  • Aspiration
  • Vocal cord cysts/polyps
  • Bowed vocal folds
  • Voice misuse
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Chronic cough

Because UAMS is a teaching hospital, we bring together a wealth of resources and expertise. We have a team of fellowship-trained doctors, speech pathologists, nurses, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment and the resources of the UAMS Medical Center to offer comprehensive and complete care of the voice and swallowing systems.

In addition to providing the highest level of patient care, we are committed to building public awareness of voice and swallowing disorders through teaching and education. Clinical and basic science research is another vital component of our voice and swallowing services.
