A vaginal fistula is an abnormal opening or passage that forms between the vagina and another organ, such as the bladder, rectum, or colon. This can result in involuntary leakage of urine, feces, or gas through the vagina, leading to significant physical and social discomfort.
There are different types of vaginal fistulas depending on the organs involved:
- Vesicovaginal fistula: A connection between the bladder and the vagina, causing leakage of urine into the vagina.
- Rectovaginal fistula: A connection between the rectum and the vagina, causing stool or gas to pass into the vagina.
- Urethrovaginal fistula: A connection between the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body) and the vagina, leading to urine leakage.
- Enterovaginal fistula: A connection between the intestine (small or large) and the vagina, leading to the passage of feces or gas into the vagina.
