There are several different categories of midwives. What UAMS is starting is a certified nurse midwifery program, which prepares advanced practice registered nurses, or APRNs.
Certified nurse midwives receive the same foundational training as women’s health nurse practitioners, with additional, specialized training in caring for women during labor and birth.
Midwifery care is very personalized, hands-on, and focused on low intervention. We recognize that pregnancy, labor, and birth are normal processes of life—until they’re not. When complications arise, we collaborate closely with our physician colleagues to ensure women receive the best possible care.
One common misconception is that midwives only care for pregnant women or that we only attend home births. In reality, we care for patients across the entire lifespan—from the onset of menstruation through menopause. We provide well-woman care, STI testing, Pap smears, routine gynecologic care, in addition to pregnancy, labor, and birth, which we provide in the hospital.
Another misconception is that midwives only care for women who want no medication or intervention during pregnancy or labor. While we emphasize low-intervention care, we also care for women who choose epidurals, desire inductions, or need other medical support during pregnancy and birth.
We also encourage patients to make their hospital room feel as comfortable and personal as possible. You’re welcome to bring items from home—such as twinkle lights, essential oils, or music—to help create a calming environment during labor and delivery.
