Peyronie’s disease is an abnormal curvature of the erect penis.
Often, this condition causes difficulty with penetrative intercourse or pain for the patient or their partner — which usually leads men to seek treatment options.
Some of the treatment options for Peyronie’s disease include traction therapy, which involves gently stretching or bending the penis to help it return to a straighter position.
We also offer intralesional injections, a treatment designed to dissolve the scar tissue that develops within the penis and causes the curvature. This can lead to significant improvement in both shape and comfort.
From there, we may consider surgical options. One procedure I perform is called a penile plication, which works by tightening the tissue on the opposite side of the curve to straighten the penis. It’s an outpatient procedure that takes about an hour, and most patients are able to resume sexual activity within about five weeks.
My colleague, Bruno Machado, M.D., offers more advanced procedures focused on restoring both length and function, such as plaque excision with grafting. This surgery removes the scar tissue and replaces it with a graft to improve straightness and maintain penile length.
This procedure is often done in combination with a penile prosthetic, since many patients with Peyronie’s disease also experience significant erectile dysfunction.
