Clinical Resource: Innovative Care for Heart Failure: Technology, Gut Health & Stress Management at UAMS Health

Description

At UAMS Health, heart failure care goes far beyond medication. Dr. Kalaivani Sivakumar explains how the UAMS heart failure team uses cutting-edge technology, personalized nutrition, and mental health support to improve patients’ lives. The UAMS heart failure program features advanced device monitoring that allows the team to track a patient’s heart health remotely — even detecting problems before symptoms appear. This proactive approach helps reduce hospitalizations and improve quality of life. Recognizing the critical role of overall wellness, the team also integrates unique programs into care. The Gut Health to Heart Health program pairs each patient with a dedicated heart failure dietitian to optimize nutrition. The Talk Your Stress Away program addresses the powerful connection between chronic stress and heart health, offering support from a social worker to help patients build resilience. From sleep and exercise to mindfulness, self-care, and mental health, UAMS Health provides a holistic, patient-centered approach to managing heart failure and improving well-being.

Innovative Care for Heart Failure: Technology, Gut Health & Stress Management at UAMS Health

Transcript

Heart failure is one of the most technologically  advanced and rapidly evolving fields. We use cutting-edge technologies for diagnosis,  monitoring and for therapy. UAMS heart failure team has a robust device monitoring program. We in the hospital are able to monitor the condition of their heart while the patient is there at  the home. Now a few of these devices can give us information even before the patient starts  to develop any symptoms. Hence we have been proactively being able to manage make medication  adjustments and call them for IV infusion therapy and this has reduced several hospitalizations and  also significantly improved their quality of life. A healthy gut is important for a healthy heart.  In the UAMS heart failure clinic, we have this gut health to heart health program where every patient  is seen by the heart failure dietician. There is a lot of literature about the heart mind connection.  In this day and age, we have noticed that chronic
stress is something that eats our mind and  slowly affects our health. Keeping this in mind, we started the talk your stress away program  in the heart failure clinic which is aimed at building resilience against all these social  determinants of health. We have a dedicated social worker who basically can listen to all  the socioeconomic stressors of patients and can talk and give resources about physical activity,  exercise, sleep optimization, stress management techniques, social support and relationships,  drug rehabilitation, mental health and counseling, mindfulness, self-care, and several other  activities for lifestyle optimization.
