I’m Meer Ali, MD. I’m a gastroenterologist at UAMS. I was smitten by medicine when I was 7 years old. It was just an interaction with these very bright noble physicians who took care of a very close family member and I never really looked back after that. I do neuro gastroenterology and to explain that a little further the gut is a muscular organ from the mouth to the anus and it propels what we eat helps in digestion and keeps up our nutrition. When everything is working fine we really don’t think much about it but there is a lot of very complex interplay between the nervous system, hormonal system, other effects anything that can affect nerves and muscles that goes behind it and those are the diseases that I take care of. People can be a little concerned about issues that they’ve had for a while and they feel that they may be a little embarrassed about uh trying to take care of those or talking to physicians about it but uh in GI we are there to help and take care of those issues. When the patient comes to visit me the first time they come to my clinic we have an intake uh we spend time together have a detailed interview as to what their issues are what help they’ve taken before what worked what didn’t work. Then together with the patient we collectively come up with a plan to work this up and help them If it wasn’t for UAMS a lot of these patients would have to go out of state would have to go far away from their homes from their families from their support systems to have care taken for and does provide state-of-the-art care. In my free time uh I like to cook. We love to have friends over and anything to do with the horses.
