Brian Langford, M.D.:
My name is Brian Langford. I’m a reconstructive urologist here at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
Some of the areas that I focus on in my practice are male reconstructive urology, which includes prosthetic urology — either surgical erectile dysfunction management or surgical treatment of male stress incontinence. I also do a lot of Peyronie’s treatment.
The other area of expertise for me is urethral stricture management. I’m the only one in the state who really offers the full spectrum of treatment options for urethral stricture disease, so I get a lot of referrals from other urologists around the state.
Urology involves the treatment of a lot of sensitive topics. Many patients who go on to be diagnosed with prostate cancer will ultimately have issues with stress incontinence or erectile dysfunction. Some of these topics are really difficult for patients to talk about, and they may go untreated for several years before working up the courage to ask their physician about treatment options.
There are options available. We can manage a lot of these conditions — it just takes the surgeon to bring up these topics in a safe, comfortable clinic environment where patients feel able to discuss their concerns.
I think the most rewarding thing for me in my practice is being able to restore patients’ function and give them their quality of life back.
A fun fact about me: I played football pretty competitively growing up. I actually set a national record my senior year of high school for the most catches in a season — right down the street at Pulaski Academy. That gave me the opportunity to play football under Houston Nutt for one season at the University of Arkansas. I got to run through the “A” for a couple of games — I never really played, but it was still a cool experience to have.
